Mango and Papaya is the chic new Caribbean restaurant on Hoe Street and after a demanding week I was in need of a taste of paradise. As soon as I stepped inside, the combined effects of the funky, soulful beats, stylish contemporary décor and exotic aromas worked to ease my tension.
My waitress was warm and welcoming and prepared me a tangy mango cocktail (mango, pineapple and lemon juice) to enjoy as I chose my meal. I started with the Very Spicy Chicken - delicious fried chicken with a seriously hot, sweet home-made chilli sauce over a fresh, crispy salad. The chicken was so good I was tempted to eat it with my fingers and the cool salad balanced the heat of the chilli perfectly.
For my main course, I opted for the pan fried Tilapia fish with peppers, okra, yam and green banana. The dish was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. The yam medley was artfully arranged in a tower adorned by the lightly fried, garlicky fish and vegetables with a serving of the house chilli.
I finished with an indulgent desert of cookies and cream ice-cream feeling mellow and contented.
